How to Measure My Walls

Every order is printed to fit your wall, so there's no counting rolls. Measure the full width and height, round up and add 4 inches. Here's how.

The short version

Measure big, round up, add 4″

Every order is printed to your wall, so there’s no counting rolls or working out pattern repeats. You just need two numbers.

  1. 1Width at the widest point, and height at the tallest.
  2. 2Round up to the next full inch.
  3. 3Add 4 inches to both. That’s 2 inches spare on every edge for trimming.
Step by step

How to measure

You’ll need a metal tape measure, a pencil and somewhere to write the numbers down. A second pair of hands helps on wide walls.

  1. Measure the width three times

Measure corner to corner along the top, the middle and the bottom of the wall. Walls are rarely perfectly square, so the three numbers often differ. Use the largest.

  2. Measure the height three times

Measure floor to ceiling at the left, the middle and the right. Floors and ceilings dip and slope, so again, use the largest.

  3. Round up

Round both numbers up to the next full inch. Never round down.

  4. Add 4 inches to both

Add 4 inches to the width and 4 inches to the height. That gives 2 inches of spare on every edge — top, bottom, left and right — to trim away when you hang it.

  5. Enter it on the product page

Type your final width and height into the size fields on the design you love. The price updates for your exact wall in the material you choose.

Why add the extra inches?

It’s tempting to order the exact size of the wall. Here’s why those few inches matter.

Walls aren’t square

Ceilings slope, floors dip and corners lean. A wall that measures 96 inches at one end can be 97 at the other. The extra covers the difference so you’re never left with a gap.

Clean edges come from trimming

A crisp line at the ceiling, skirting and corners comes from trimming away spare paper with a sharp blade — not from hoping a panel lands exactly. Without spare, there’s nothing to trim.

Your first panel goes up straight, not square to the corner

You hang the first panel to a level line, not to the wall’s edge. If the corner leans, that panel needs a little extra to reach it.

It’s printed just for you

Because we print to your exact size, there’s no spare roll to grab. A wall that comes up short means a reprint and a wait.

Too big can be trimmed. Too small can’t be fixed.

Obstacles

Windows, doors and awkward walls

Windows and doors

Don’t subtract them. Measure the full wall as if they weren’t there. The design has to carry on above and below a window and line up on either side of a door; you cut the opening out as you hang. With a mural, the whole image is scaled to the full wall, so taking openings off would shrink or shift it.

Outlets and switches

Ignore them when you measure. Turn off the power, take the cover plates off and trim around them when you hang.

Fireplaces and built-ins

Measure the full wall behind them, the same way as a window. Trim around them as you go.

Sloped ceilings and stairwells

Measure the widest and tallest points of the wall and we’ll print a rectangle that covers it all. You trim to the slope as you hang.

More than one wall

Measure each wall on its own and write them all down. Planning to wrap a design around a corner? Get in touch first and we’ll help you plan it.

FAQs

Should I subtract windows and doors?

No. Measure the full wall and cut the openings out when you hang. The design needs to continue around them and line up, and murals are scaled to the full wall.

Do I need to work out how many rolls I need?

No. Every order is printed to the size you enter, so there’s no roll maths or pattern-repeat sums. Just enter your width and height (with the extra 4 inches) on the product page.

Is it the same for wallpaper and murals?

Yes, measure both the same way. A mural is one artwork scaled to fill your wall; wallpaper is a repeating pattern tiled across it. Either way, you give us the wall size plus 4 inches.

What if my measurements are slightly off?

That’s what the extra 4 inches is for. As long as you used the largest measurements and rounded up, a little variation is trimmed away when you hang.

Can I measure in centimetres?

Of course — just convert before you order, as the size fields take feet and inches. Add 10 cm to each measurement (that’s about 4 inches).

Won’t I waste wallpaper on the window area?

A little gets trimmed away, yes — but that’s what keeps the pattern continuous and the image in proportion. Ordering around the openings would leave the design misaligned.

I’m still not sure — can you help?

Yes. Send us a photo of the wall with rough measurements and we’ll calculate it for you, free of charge.
