Kids Wallpaper That Grows With Them: Meet the Birch Forest Kids Mural

Some rooms are just places to sleep. Others turn into whole worlds. Picture a quiet grove of birch trees running wall to wall, with blueberry bushes at their roots. A small fox pauses mid-step among the trunks, and a chickadee watches from a branch overhead. That’s the Birch Forest Kids Mural, the newest addition to our kids wallpaper collection. It’s designed and printed to order in Vancouver.

Lots of kids wallpaper leans on bright cartoons that look dated by grade two. This mural takes a different approach. The fox and chickadee are drawn in the same fine, hand-sketched line as the trees, so they belong to the forest instead of sitting on top of it. The scene is playful enough for a toddler and calm enough for a ten-year-old. It’s honestly a wall most grown-ups would be happy to have in their own room.

Below we cover how it works in a nursery, how to style it for boys’ and girls’ rooms, and which wallpaper type suits a kids’ room: peel and stick or traditional.

Nursery wallpaper that sets a calm tone

A nursery is the first room most parents decorate, and it gets looked at in every 3 a.m. feed. Good nursery wallpaper should feel soothing, not loud. The Birch Forest Kids mural keeps its palette soft and its detail fine. Up close there’s plenty to discover. From across the room it reads as one gentle woodland.

  • Put the mural behind the crib. The trunks run the full height of the wall, so the forest frames the crib without being right at eye level for your baby.
  • Go woodland, not themed. A birch forest says “woodland nursery” without forcing you into a matching bedding set. Natural wood, linen and a sheepskin rug all work with it.
  • Plan for the long run. A nursery becomes a toddler room, then a big-kid room. A hand-drawn forest stays relevant long after a cartoon theme would need replacing.
  • Choose a low-VOC print. Our murals are Greenguard Gold certified, which means they’re tested for low chemical emissions. That matters in a room where a newborn spends most of the day asleep.

Boys wallpaper, girls wallpaper, or both? One mural, four colourways

Search for “boys wallpaper” or “girls wallpaper” and you’ll mostly find blue trucks or pink princesses. Kids rarely fit the box for long. The Birch Forest Kids mural comes in four colourways instead, so you choose the mood of the room rather than a label.

Colourway The look Works well for
Spring Fresh leaf greens on soft cream Gender-neutral nurseries, shared rooms, playrooms
Autumn Warm amber and rust leaves Boys’ rooms that want warmth over blue, cosy reading corners
Delft Cool cornflower blue Classic boys’ rooms, or a calm, coastal-feeling girls’ room
Antique Warm cream, tan and taupe Girls’ rooms that want softness without pink overload

For a boys’ room: Delft and Autumn pair well with navy, denim, rust and natural pine. The fox gives you an adventurous storybook feel without anything that ages badly.

For a girls’ room: Antique sits beautifully with blush, sage and cream linens. Spring brings a brighter garden feel that suits a busy, creative kid.

For siblings sharing a room: Spring is the easy middle ground. It’s green, natural and doesn’t take sides.

Peel and stick vs traditional wallpaper for kids’ rooms

For most kids’ rooms we recommend peel and stick. It’s washable, waterproof, comes off without damaging the wall, and you can put it up yourself in an afternoon. Traditional wallpaper still makes sense in a few cases, covered below. Every Birch Forest Kids mural comes in any of our three materials.

Why peel and stick wins for most kids’ rooms

  • It survives childhood. Both peel and stick finishes are waterproof and washable, so marker, yogurt and muddy handprints wipe off with a damp cloth.
  • It moves on when they do. Kids’ rooms change roughly every few years: nursery, toddler, school age, tween. Peel and stick comes off cleanly when it’s time for the next look, with no steaming or scraping.
  • It’s renter-friendly. If you rent, you can have a feature wall and still get your deposit back.
  • You can do it yourself. Panels can be lifted and re-aligned while you hang, so one slightly crooked drop isn’t a disaster. Most confident DIYers finish a feature wall in half a day.
  • Canvas texture hides glare. If the mural faces a big window, the Canvas Texture finish has zero glare, which helps a lot in sunny Canadian bedrooms.

When traditional wallpaper is the better call

  • You want invisible seams. Traditional panels butt edge to edge, while peel and stick mural panels overlap by an inch.
  • It’s a lower-traffic wall. A feature wall behind a bed or above a dado rail doesn’t see much sticky-hand traffic.
  • It’s staying put. If this is the forever room and you love that classic paper finish, traditional is a lovely choice. Just plan on a professional installer and a cut-and-soak removal later.

Tips for either material

  • Start with a clean, dry, smooth wall. Fill nail holes and lightly sand.
  • Freshly painted walls or new drywall need at least 3–4 weeks to cure before any wallpaper goes up. Factor that in if you’re painting the nursery before baby arrives.
  • Not sure which finish you’ll like? Order a free swatch pack with one sample of each material before you commit.

Sizing your kids’ mural

You don’t need to count rolls or work out pattern repeats. Every Birch Forest Kids mural is printed to the exact size of your wall.

  1. Measure the wall. Measure the width corner to corner at the widest point, and the height floor to ceiling at the tallest point. Round up to the nearest inch, then add 2 inches to both width and height. We add a little extra on our side too, so there’s plenty to trim cleanly at the ceiling and baseboard.
  2. Enter it on the product page. You’ll see the price for your exact wall in your chosen material. Prices start from $4.50 per sq ft.
  3. Wide wall? No problem. The birch grove continues sideways without a visible join, so a long bedroom wall just gets more forest. Nothing gets stretched.
  4. Sloped ceiling or tricky wall? Send us a photo with rough measurements and we’ll work it out for you at no charge.

Each order arrives with numbered panels and an install guide sized for your wall. See our mural application guide for the full steps. If you’d rather not DIY, browse our recommended installers across Canada.

Kids wallpaper FAQ

Is peel and stick wallpaper safe for a nursery?

Our peel and stick materials are Greenguard Gold certified, which means they’re tested for low chemical emissions and suitable for nurseries and children’s rooms.

Can kids’ murals be wiped clean?

Yes, if you choose either peel and stick finish. Both are waterproof and washable. Traditional Non-woven is wipeable but not washable, so it’s better suited to walls little hands don’t reach.

Will peel and stick damage my walls when we redecorate?

No. On a properly prepared wall, Smooth Matte and Canvas Texture peel and stick both come off without damaging the wall.

What’s the difference between kids wallpaper and a kids mural?

Wallpaper is a repeating pattern tiled across the wall. A mural is one large scene scaled to fill the wall. Birch Forest Kids is a mural, so you get one continuous forest rather than a repeat.

Can I change the colours to match my child’s room?

Yes. We print to order, so we can recolour a design to match a paint chip, Pantone or photo. Get in touch and we’ll quote it.
