Hydrangea is by Eli Nora, a Canadian surface pattern designer whose earlier career in architecture and graphic design gives her patterns their clear structure. She is inspired by flowers and the natural world, and here she breaks a hydrangea head into simple petal shapes. The design is part of our Canadian Artists collection, printed to order in Vancouver, and each sale pays her a royalty.
The ground is a soft periwinkle blue, with petals in cornflower, cobalt, powder blue and near-white, plus tiny chartreuse dots at their centres. In daylight it reads fresh and clear, like the flowers themselves. In warm lamplight the blues soften towards lavender, and in cool Canadian winter light they look crisper and slightly greyer.
Each cluster is medium scale and set in a diamond arrangement, joined by curving trails of small dots, so the pattern has both a floral and a lattice rhythm. There is a fair amount of detail, but the single-colour family keeps it from feeling busy. It is a mid-light background that brightens a room.
It is well suited to a bedroom, where blue is restful, and to a living room feature wall between shelving. The cheerful colour also lifts a breakfast nook or a north-facing room that needs brightness. It pairs naturally with white, cream and pale wood, and suits coastal, cottage and modern classic interiors.
Peel and stick is ideal for a renter or a single accent wall, as it can be removed when you move. Canvas-textured peel and stick gives a subtle woven finish that softens the petals and suits a painterly floral. For a whole bedroom or a permanent installation, traditional paste-the-wall paper gives the most durable result.
