This design comes from Canadian surface pattern designer Eli Nora’s Terracotta Stone Garden series. With a background in architecture and graphic design, she builds patterns from organic shapes and natural forms, and here she layers rounded pebble outlines with spiky flower heads. It is part of our Canadian Artists collection and is printed to order in Vancouver, and the artist receives a royalty on each order.
The main colour is a warm terracotta ground, with the pebble outlines in soft blush pink. The burst flowers mix blush, dusty rose, peach and deep maroon. In daylight it feels earthy and warm. Under evening lamps the terracotta glows close to copper-brick, while the cooler light of a Canadian winter flattens it to a muted clay, with the pink lines standing out more.
The pebble outlines are large and fill the whole surface, and the flower bursts vary from small to quite large, clustering more densely in some areas. The overall effect is lively and organic, with more movement than a regular repeat. It is a mid-tone background, rich in colour without being dark.
It makes a warm, characterful feature wall in a living room, particularly with a green velvet sofa or olive upholstery, which balances the terracotta. It also suits a dining room or a wide entryway. It works best in eclectic, mid-century and maximalist interiors where pattern and colour are welcome.
The wallpaper is supplied as numbered panels, each 24 inches wide, and they need to go up edge to edge in numerical order. Because the pebble outlines flow across the seams, hanging out of sequence would break the lines. Start from a plumb line, lay the panels out in order first, and check each join before smoothing it down.
