Stephanie Dennison, a Canadian artist based on Vancouver Island, who has been doodling since she was a child. This design turns that impulse into graffiti-style lettering and characters. It is part of her Black and White Colouring Book Walls series in our Canadian Artists collection, printed to order in Vancouver, and Stephanie earns a royalty from every sale.
Black and white only, in close to equal measure – the heavy outlines and solid shapes give it more black than most of her line-drawn designs. The contrast is high and stays strong in any light. Warm lamplight softens the white a touch; cool winter light makes it look crisp and urban.
Very busy. Bubble letters, tags and characters overlap with no empty ground, at medium to large scale. Up close you can pick out faces and letters; from across a room it reads as a bold black-and-white texture. It is mid-tone overall because of the amount of black.
It is ideal for a teen bedroom, a basement lounge or games room, or a creative studio. Its street-art character suits urban, industrial and eclectic schemes – concrete, stone, black metal and large green plants all work with it. Use it on one wall and keep the rest plain.
