Eli Nora, a Canadian surface pattern designer with a background in architecture and graphic design, created this design for her Burgundy Whisper series. Flowers and nature are central to her work, as is her interest in colour and repetition, both clear in this busy scatter of blooms. It is part of our Canadian Artists collection, printed to order in Vancouver, and earns the artist a royalty on each sale.
The ground is a warm sand beige, the flowers are a deep mustard yellow, and the leaves are a dark aubergine plum. The mustard and plum contrast brings out the shapes of the flowers. In lamplight the whole wall glows a warm ochre, while cooler Canadian winter daylight tones the mustard down and lets the plum leaves stand out more strongly.
The flower heads are medium scale and scattered closely, with leaves overlapping them at varied angles, so the pattern is fairly lively and covers most of the ground. From across a room it reads as a warm, textured all-over print. It sits on a light background, which keeps the energy cheerful rather than heavy.
It works especially well in a dining room, where a warm, active pattern above a dark dado or with charcoal walls feels inviting at dinner. It also suits a kitchen breakfast nook or a living room with mid-century or vintage furniture. Velvet chairs in burgundy, forest green or charcoal echo the plum leaves and ground the mustard.
The panels are printed with Greenguard certified latex inks, so the surface can be wiped down. In a dining room or kitchen nook, dab away splashes with a damp, soft cloth and a little mild soap, rather than scrubbing. The busy mustard and plum pattern disguises small marks well, which helps in a well-used room.
